Have you noticed when shopping at the big super centers the last few years, that there are less and less cashiers checking out your purchase and more and more computerized self-check outs? Scan here and scan there and make sure not to lift the bag from the bagging area. In the meantime, one over stressed underpaid young individual who is usually a woman because they have more patience than men, is running around monitoring five or six self-checkout areas. The large public company has in one swoop eliminated four to five full or part-time cashiers. So basically, you have one minimum wage plus a quarter young female overseeing the checkout of five to six times the average checkout of one cashier. The company does not care about the consumer who is interacting with the self-checkout computer and needs a shot of whiskey after paying for their purchase. The American consumer should just stand up and say never again will we use the self-checkout. We want real live friendly or even unfriendly people cashiers with a pulse, to handle our purchases.
The self-service computerized checkout is a major cost savings to the company. Further, when adding in the benefits such as medical, sick leave, training, uniforms, vacation pay, etc. it is an enormous cut off the top of the bottom line, which increases the profits and puts more money into the pockets of the top executives, running the large companies.
