Kashgar is the westernmost city in China, located near its border with Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan. On the outskirts of Kashgar one comes across its livestock market, which has been running every Sunday since Marco Polo’s time and very likely even before. The market begins with Uighur farmers and herders journeying into the city from nearby villages. They and their animals arrive on foot, in trucks, on motorcycles, even in taxis.
Trading at the market is quick and boisterous, while animals are carefully inspected and haggling is done with finger motions.
One edge of the market area is left open for riders to try out prospective horses, while elsewhere food and beverages are available in tented stalls.
