The Biltmore House is America’s largest private residence. It is also quite overwhelming, as the house has 178,000 square feet of floor space, 250 rooms, 65 fireplaces, and a dining hall with 70 foot ceilings. Additionally, every part of the house is filled with extremely ornate furnishings. I had the unusual opportunity to photograph anything that I found of interest there, but narrowing down was an arduous task.
Due to the fact that I use Light Painting as my method of illumination, the large scale was a factor, as I had to spend many hours on top of a tall ladder, all the while in the dark. Of course, we were there after hours, so the shoot made for some very late nights. I have used Light Painting as my sole method of lighting for many years, due to its ability to bring out tremendous depth, dimension and detail.
