There are many reasons for the decline of family farms in the U.K. Small farms can not keep up with the changing economy, it is mostly the large farms and big agriculture businesses that remain because the larger the operation, the cheaper is the production. About 10 small farms shut down not being able to compete, for every new huge factory farm. Furthermore, the supermarket chains, which control the majority of the U.K. food market, only want to deal with big farmers and they are putting an enormous pressure to keep the prices as low as possible, making it very hard for small farmers to survive.
