The seaside town was once sold as a slice of paradise for affluent east Londoners looking to escape the capital during the summer for sun and fun. Its beach bungalows have now become permanent homes for a tight-knit and stoical community enduring harsh economic strains. The UK government’s ‘Indices of Multiple Deprivation’ measure ranked Jaywick as the most deprived of all 32,482 small wards in England and Wales. The photographs were made during the height of negative media attention and were motivated by a desire to understand who are the people in this much-maligned seaside town.
