Yerevan is located at the North-east valley of Mount Ararat and it is the capital of Armenia. Historically, it has been populated since the 8th century B.C. and it is among the world’s oldest cities. Its advantageous location is the one that historically led to its conquest by many neighboring people, such as the Arabs, the Seljuk Turks, and the Russians. After its conquest by the Red Army in 1921, it began the development of the city to a modern industrial metropolis. The Soviet era left an indelible mark on its modern urban and cultural development. Until today, almost 30 years after the dissolution of the U.S.S.R., Yerevan seems to still exist under the shade of the major powers of the region, while it tries to balance between the traditional ethical values and the modern lifestyle. Once the sun sets, the city takes off the mask of correctness, expressing its wish to find itself and claim a position among the modern big cities of the 21st century.
