Iron Mountain: Crawshay’s scars and burned out cars
Blorenge and Gilwern Hill in South Wales were once alive with mining and iron forges, the seat of industry during the Industrial Revolution, and source of vast wealth for notorious iron masters such as Crawshay Bailey. Most of the cannonballs fired at the Battle of Waterloo were forged on this mountain.
Iron Mountain: Crawshay’s scars and burned out cars look at the indelible footprint of man’s activities on the mountain, as well as the horrendous detritus of modern fly tipping and waste sullying this outstandingly beautiful, yet bleak area. This is a story of the demise of a non-sustainable industry on a landscape now given over to the more sustainable pursuits of leisure and protection of nature, although sadly against the backdrop of the fallout of the jettisoned rubbish of the disposable society.
