Written by Will Baxter
He caught his eye in the mirror,
His eyes have seen so many nights,
He’s driven on so many times,
Not the first one and
You won’t be the… no,
Time to stop what you’re saying
And just say nothing for a while,
Taxi Driver.
He looks up at the mirror,
And sees the boy in the eyes of the man on the backseat,
Sitting in his taxi.
He’s just looking, at this hour where
There’s no use in checking your watch
It’s already too late,
Especially to negotiate a flight stairs,
His wandering gazes flies out the window,
His eyes watch it go on alone, through the night
It goes where it wants to, the wind’s not blowing.
You rarely get a license to wander, do you?
Taxi Driver.
Changing gear not much has changed round
Here bar the songs in their ears,
They’ve changed with the years.
There’s a look he’s seen before, sitting there in the mirror,
Yes he’s seen that look before there in the mirror.
The look of eyes that hold back their tears, he wonders who,
From whom have they withheld their tears?
The eyes between the ears the mirror holds up to you,
Taxi Driver.
Wishing for a longer drive
His feelings shade the colours of the night
While they drive by.
The driver’s driving
Like the sky might die.
Lord, don’t let the night sky die.
From home they’re still a little while,
Wishing for the while to while on a little longer
Than it will in the end,
But not you, taxi driver,
The end of this can’t come to soon, oh
Taxi Driver.
Few words were said but those that were
Stay in his head, the taxi driver’s.
“I think you are a good man, for what you did.”
“But you don’t know what else I did,
If you only knew what else I’ve done,
And you wouldn’t be the only one, no
Taxi driver.”
The words stay playing in his head,
He wishes he was in his bed, the taxi driver.
The look he saw, still sitting there in the mirror, taxi driver.
Long gone, the backseat man has gone, oh taxi driver.
You can’t help what you can’t change, so let it go now taxi driver.
Taxi Driver.
