Brief biography: Laurent Barrera was born in 1966 in Marseille and spent his childhood between the South Pacific and Provence. He began a career as a geological engineer in the Indian Ocean before becoming a winemaker in Provence. His travels to export his wines took him many times to Japan where he discovered an aesthetic and a relationship with Beauty that would strongly influence his artistic activity. In 2019, Laurent Barrera won the grand prize of the Arles photo contest chaired by Sam Stourdzé for the 50th anniversary of the festival and the 100th anniversary of Olympus. Following the appearance of an occupational disability (deafness), he sold his wine estate to devote himself full-time to photography. He set up as a photographic artist in 2021 and participated in several festivals such as Photomenton, the Rencontres du Prieuré de Salaize, the Nuits de la photographie de Pierrevert 2022 with his series Koï, Besançon, Présence Photographie in Montélimar... He is also the author of the photo book "Koï" which won first prize at the 2022 Namur International Festival in the photo book category. In 2023, he held his first monographic exhibition by the Galerie de l'Atelier. He is currently working on his next photo book on Shintoïsm and Japanese esthetic. Each image is thought of as a photographic haiku, a dense and chiseled creation which, by its form, invites poetry.
