Macro Photography & Climate Reflections

Baa Reef : Baa Atoll in the Maldives comprises seventy-five islands of which only thirteen are inhabited. Recognized as a Unesco natural Biosphere Reserve, it is a natural paradise of undisputed beauty that is home to 250 species of coral and 1,200 species of fish that are in danger of dying due to climate change. I immersed myself in this heavenly world, becoming intimate with a rose.

Spiral Canyon also known as Antelope Canyon is located in Navajo territory in Arizona. It is a magical place where the beams of direct sunlight creep between the rocks with sinuous shapes, while a trickle of sand falls from above. I flew over this place, gliding my macro lens over a purple cabbage.

Bahia Mangorve : The Bahia mangroves is a tropical ecoregion in the Bahia coastal forests in eastern Brazil. Mangrove ecosystems can naturally absorb amounts of carbon dioxide comparable to the Amazon rainforest, making them a valuable resource in countering global climate change. Unfortunately 25% of the worldwide mangrove has been destroyed by man in the last 3 decades. I explored the Brazilian mangrove by introducing myself to a passion fruit flower accompanied by the heroes of the Blue Forest https://blueforest.co/

Cordillera Andina has a length of 8,500 km, making it the longest continental mountain range on Earth. Its average height is between 3000 and 4000 mt and is home to the highest volcanoes on the planet. I have flown over the Andes exploring a purple cabbage leaf.

Inylchek Glacier: Glaciers in Kyrgyzstan occupy 30% of the total surface of the country even though they are retreating about 15 meters per year and this is unfortunately a common evil for the entire area that contains the second concentration of ice on Earth after the polar regions. This phenomenon foretells a catastrophic future for India, Nepal and China. I observed this phenomenon while climbing the steep walls that are found in the heart of a red cabbage.

This series was born during the days of the COVID-19 lockdown when we were banned from traveling, with the goal of escaping my thoughts from that imprisonment and imagining landscapes elsewhere. I explored mysterious, hidden, microscopic unvisited places that I found while exploring plant foods or flowers. To these intimate places explored with a macro lens and a light-table, I then wanted to associate some real places on our planet. From this associative process it was unfortunately confirmed that climate change is seriously endangering the Earth and the life of Humanity. This conclusion therefore transformed my series also as a denunciation of the catastrophic path we are stubbornly taking.

Erotic India: The 22 temples located in Khajuraho in the state of Madhya Pradesh in India are famous for the erotic scenes located on the exterior walls of the temples. I found these maithuna scenes of amorous postures while dissecting a cabbage.

Paria Purple Cliff: On the border between Arizona and Utah in the USA, Paria Canyon and its tributary, Buckskin Gulch, form spectacular “narrows” only a few feet wide in places and several hundred feet deep. This made for an aerial view of those who were exploring a red-cabbage leaf.

Bungle Bungle : In the remote Kimberley region of Australia, there is a sacred place for the Aborigines: Bungle Bungle. The unusual orange and dark grey banding on the conical rock formations is caused by differences in the layers of sandstone. The darker bands hold more moisture and are a dark algal or cyanobacteria growth. The orange-colored layers are stained with iron and manganese mineral deposits contained within the sandstone. I found all this by drone in the heart of a red cabbage.

WhiteSwan Lake: The shining waters of two mountain lakes, Whiteswan and Alces, and natural hot springs are the focal points of Whiteswan Lake Park in British Columbia, a province of Canada. The hot springs are in the traditional territory of the Ktunaxa people that made fishing a fundamental part of their diet and culture, while maintaining the old traditions of game hunting. I soared to those places when I arrived in the most intimate parts of a red cabbage.

Eyjafjallajökull is a volcano located north of Skógar in the Suðurland region of southern Iceland. The 2010 eruption was of such magnitude that it caused the disruption of air traffic, the closure of airports and airspace over most of northern and central Europe. I flew over the immense lava flow still incandescent, backlighting a red cabbage leaf.

I am curious about life, with idealistic tendencies, and a fighter striving to align what I live with what I feel. Born in Italy but having moved years ago to Bilbao, I work as an IT consultant. As a child, I dreamed of painting, but my skills held me back; photography became the medium that allowed me to channel my creative flow. Influential masters such as Franco Fontana, Larry Fink, Joan Fontcuberta, Pilar Pequeño, and Juan Pablo De Miguel taught me to put technique at the service of thought and intentionality.

I am a collaborator with Dodho Magazine and a recognized visual artist, honored with various international awards. My work has been exhibited or featured in Descubrimientos PHE, VIPHOTO, Fotonostrum, PhotoNoviembre, DEARTE, St. Petersburg Photo Week, ICMPhotoMag, Dodho, ARTDOC Mag, Sineresi Mag, and ArtAviso.
