There in the mirror
He sees nothing of his youth
For Wilmington Calare forgot
To bring it with him when he left for work
This morning.
Flecks of aluminium spat from his lathe
Coat his dark blue overalls, deeply stained
In the colours of his food, a waterfall
From the collar to the overhang above his belt.
–
Pulling of his hairnet, there to keep his
Long grey matted hair from spinning
On the lathe with an inch or two of scalp,
He scrubs his chin free of sauce
And contemplates his fate.
–
With grumbling sigh and hairnet back in place he dreams, (while walking snail paced
To the lathe dreading picking up the chain for his collar), of a sailboat
White sails aloft, with crimson letters “Wilmington Calare” shouting his success
While his crew mates clap their applause at his farewell address.
–
To board his waiting limousine, with smartly dressed driver, blonde hair curls peeking from her cap, asking where to sir.
–
But alas with jolting harshness
The foreman’s hurry up Calare
Rips the dream and wipes it across the floor
And in the corner of his eye an orphan tear
Slowly dries.
