Flowers
.
On Friday I brought you flowers
Strong colours, tender fragrances
Brightening the gloom
They bought a kiss so slow
By Saturday our lips still locked
We sank into a bed of petals
Nettles, thorns and earth
I licked your blood to heal
The scratches they had made
On Sunday I cooked breakfast
Candied roses, coffee
Smells to wake the senses
Monday I washed from your hair
The scent of four days
Making love.
On Tuesday I killed you
Bludgeoned til your bones
Had softened like your buttocks
Wednesday we planned
Escape: Easter Island
Hawaii, or Belize
On Thursday I remembered
You were dead
And I was bathed in blood
On Friday I brought you flowers

Sold and Bartered: The Poems of Ruswa Fatehpuri 1991 to 2013. Selected from over twenty years of writing and drawn from the literary traditions of both Britain and India, these poems cover formative experiences with a combination of warm wistfulness and unforgiving insight. Ruswa takes us from the yearning for fatherhood in A Sowing of Seeds and Santa Sophia, to the joys of fatherhood in Monsoon. He reflects on loss in all its many forms: the loss of loved ones, hope and faith; all interspersed with moments of romance and humour.
