When the world abandons you for all things shiny,
what is it you find when you look at it?
Do you feel shame?
In the way it favors the strong—
in all its unfairness and callousness.
Or do you rage in pity?
For those who cannot stand up for themselves,
with no one to shield their softness or vulnerability.
When the water overruns the deep and dark,
and suffocates you out of your bed,
do you ever question the insanity of it all?
Heh, I did.
And like all the crazy people who ever existed,
I suffered, brutalized, and burned.
I suffered for my insolence—
or at least that’s what they called it.
As if it wasn’t their own facade
that crumbled at the slightest touch of truth.
As if their big talks and big walks of nobleness
could hide their privileged, noble self
from the shallow ways of life they have lived.
So what if it’s only my voice out there?
I will speak.
Even if my throat burns, my sound rattles—
I shall speak.
Because when the world abandons you for all things shiny,
you hardly have anything else to lose.
So why fear it at all?
Losing, living, and dying.
Dying of a life well lived;
on your own terms, by your own faith.
They may say there is no dignity in being abandoned.
I say there is no dignity greater than being abandoned,
for living your truth and standing your ground.
So when they feed you those lies next time,
and tell you how you are not shiny enough,
turn to them, give them a smile, and say it—
“Try Harder.”
