Artist’s Statement

Until my retirement a number of years ago, I was an advertising Art Director, with a long career working at major agencies for national and international clients.

Currently, I am working on a number of projects, from local street and urban landscape photography to nudes and still life. My street photography has always been key—I usually photograph in my immediate neighborhood but often venture downtown and I always have my eye out for a great scene while traveling.

I take quiet, thoughtful photos. Pictures of the pauses between words. These are familiar places yet there is always something new to see. I watch the trees, the shadows and the evidence of human presence, objects left along the curb. Humanity is always present in my work, even when people are not in the frame. My work is based on the notion of celebrating what is given, what is ordinary, what is there. My photos are stories and conversations with the subject and with the viewer. They are intimate observations of the everyday.

In a subdued way, I make my pictures a little unsettling, provocative but with a quiet wit. They sometimes leave more questions than answers.

My photos have been exhibited in several venues, local and international, as well as being honored with awards in numerous competitions. In 2020, Regal House published the book, The Purpose of Things, with poems by Peter Serchuk accompanied by 40 of my photographs.
