Written by Claudia Coleman
The birds came to the sill this morning
While you were sleeping,
My husband said to me.
They left you a message, he added,
A special message just for you.
What was the message? I asked,
Turning to the window,
Seeing in my mind’s eye
The sparrows on the sill,
Scanning the sky in the glass for my face.
What message do the pelicans gloss
As they skim the wavefroth,
Gliding from trough to peak
Turning the wavepages,
Reading the language of the deep?
And the herons?
What do they read on the currents of air
As they wing their way from shore to nest
Through the salt-laden heat of the marshes?
And the sparrows, pecking the ground in the city park,
Or the robin, cocking its eye to the grass?
What do the birdwings write in the sky?
Their wings a flash of semaphore.
What was the message? I asked again.
— That they left a message just for you.
