We are proud to introduce Photography Beyond The Lens, our new reader-supported exploration of the connections between photography and the human experience — behaviour, psychology, society, history, and culture. Your contributions help us maintain an independent platform dedicated to promoting storytellers from around the world. Thank you for supporting our mission and being part of our journey.
The camera had barely been introduced to the world when it was pointed at a naked body.
Photography was publicly announced in 1839. Within a few years, photographers were producing nude images that could be privately owned, handled, exchanged—and viewed again and again. The technology that promised to preserve reality had immediately discovered another market: desire.
The daguerreotype was particularly suited to this new trade. Unlike a painting, it could reproduce the human body with startling precision. Unlike a public painting, it could be small enough to hold in one’s hand. Some erotic daguerreotypes were hand-colored, making skin appear more lifelike. Others were placed into stereoscopic viewers, creating an illusion of three-dimensional space. The viewer looked through the device privately, almost like looking through a keyhole.
Photography had created something more powerful than a nude drawing: the feeling of looking at a real person.
But there was a problem. “255 words to go. A donation keeps you reading and supports our independence. Thank you!”
