John Muir, the naturalist, explorer and advocate of U.S. forest conservation once said, “I only went out for a walk and finally concluded to stay out till sundown, for going out, I found, was really going in.” I believe that we are deeply intertwined with nature, operate by her laws and desperately depend on her bounty and resources. We are in an intimate relationship with nature, physically and emotionally.
Pareidolia is a collection of images in which I highlight different aspects of trees and rocks that are suggestive of the human form. I have intentionally left out people from my photographs, but the human element is etched into every image for the viewer to find.
Using only available light, I explore the essence of my subjects by getting closer and closer to discover the mesmerizing forms and textures in the seemingly random patterns in my environment. Sometimes I approach a tree so intimately that I can see the fibers that hold the bark in, but are stretched out so tightly that I wonder why they haven’t burst open yet to reveal the secrets beneath. This intimacy with nature allows me to embrace that world and to interpret and construct my own reality. I invite you to join me in this endeavor of discovery and wonder of pareidolia.
*Pareidolia: a situation in which someone sees a pattern or image of something that does not exist, for example a face in a cloud or the curve of a torso in a tree.
