Rules of injustice
Going through Newark’s international terminal.
Post nine/eleven world.
Taking our shoes off,
all metal objects dropped
onto conveyor belt bins.
Feelings of violation,
being frisked with blue hands.
Scares of possible terrorism.
Women of India with colorful saris.
Sandaless and told to sit quietly,
on gray metal airport chairs.
Questions demanding answers.
“Where are you flying?”
What is your business in that country?”
Caucasians are streaming,
through the lines with ease.
The look of humiliation on India’s daughters.
Sadness and singled out because of race.
Our eyes met and I thought,
“Why me?”
Why am I free to move on?”
Because I don’t fit the terrorist profile.
Feeling anger over these women’s detainment.
The colors of the airport,
are broken and shattered.
With too many prejudicial lines.
