Written by Jay Logan Lance
When it’s time to not go gently, let me
Rage at the darkness, angry and afraid,
But then be forceful and please take my keys.
Long after my dad was clearly in need
Of intervention, we still avoided
Being forceful and did not take his keys.
Then making a trailer delivery
Five hundred fifty miles away, dad
Lost control and rolled the trailer three
Times across two lanes of traffic. Though he
Managed not to injure anyone, dad’s
Insurance company dropped him and we
Had no choice, we had to take his keys.
But dad loved to drive. We yada yada’d
Until the neurologist told him he
Could. Not. Drive. If dementia comes to me
In the dying light, as it did to dad,
Though I might rage and rage, curse and bless me
Through your tears, then please, please
just take my keys.
