Written by Jay Logan Lance
I woke and found fifty-seven me’s
laying face down on my lawn,
in no particular order,
one from each year of my life,
holding hands, scattered as
heavy chrome chain links
tossed carelessly onto the ground,
covered in summer dew. And
not expecting ghosts at dawn and
half-asleep as the dogs go
about their morning business,
I curl my toes in the wet grass
and say, “Brrrr,” out loud,
noting that all of these me’s
also do, a collective tremble of
rolling r’s and flexing feet, and
I wonder if I cause them more
than they cause me.
