Written by Kevin Stuart Brodie
We can hope
what tears us apart
holds us together.
We put our
old pictures in albums,
or away in drawers,
but we still remember
the feel of monkey bars
in our hands
and the upside down
world that opened
when we hung by our legs
from the top.
The path has been
decorated with
the satin and chiffon
of old prom dresses,
laughter in hallways
and notes passed
in classrooms.
Sometimes
the summer stars threaten
to fall into the sea for good,
chased over the horizon
by a spot on an x-ray
or a patch of black ice.
And though we know
the sun doesn’t
really come up,
we still find a way
to take our daily bread.
Even if the goblet
needs to be held
with two hands.
