Written by J. B. Hogan
In 1856 Arkansas, there were three young men
named Anthony, Aaron, and Randall
charged with killing an enslaver named Boone
who reneged on a deal to share profits.
It was charged that with clubs they did beat him,
these enslaved men Anthony, Aaron, and Randall.
The old man lay dead, head battered in
for neighbors to find one morning.
A cry went out and three suspects were found
Anthony, Aaron, and Randall.
The law brought them in, before judge and jury,
one was found guilty, but the other two were not, of
Anthony, Aaron, and Randall.
The State hung Randall then, without recourse or check,
while Boone’s sons and an angry white mob took Anthony and Aaron,
against the law and its ruling, to a tree not far by,
its limbs thick and sturdy, and hung them there, without recourse or check.
Three young men, lost to history and memory, or so it would seem,
until the story was found and the names finally recalled of
Anthony, Aaron, and Randall.
