Written by J. B. Hogan
Reverend Anthony Bewley of Tennessee
rode the pre-war circuit in Virginia
Missouri, Arkansas, and Texas,
chose the northern church in the great
Methodist Episcopal schism of 1844.
With conflict in the offing, he preached
abolition to slave-holding ears,
triggered their ire, felt the wrath
of boiling, roiling Texas, barely
escaped, took his family through
Indian Territory, back across Arkansas,
until old parishioners and friends
captured him in southern Missouri,
held him for ransom in Fayetteville,
returned him to Fort Worth, where that
same night he was hung from a tree,
left dangling till the morning,
his body shallow-buried, soon
dug up, de-fleshed and put above
Ephraim Daggett’s store for kids
to play with and everyone to see
how Texas dealt with heretics and infidels
opposed to god-sanctioned slavery.
