Written by Sara Grimes
It’s the friends
That go missing
You assumed you said something
Insensitive
Later heard they were
On the streets
Beer.
It’s the poems we don’t
Want to write
That are the most
Important.
Self-absorption is how we protect ourselves,
When we’re depressed.
It’s also treacherous, in a time,
When we need community.
She told me,
“We all have a little smurf in us,”
Was last seen,
Waiting for a ride from her dad.
I never saw her at the shelter.
Should have given her my number,
Sooner.
Was discouraged from it
By a girl
Who told me
S needed to be able to do
Her own laundry
Before expecting help from others
Now I need to do mine, badly.
