Rotterdam was between 1962 and 2004 the largest port in the world, but this position was taken over by the Port of Shanghai.  Singapore and Tianjin ports have also surpassed the Rotterdam harbor is size. However, with the construction of the Maasvlakte2 section,  the Rotterdam Harbor is again the largest port of the world.

Maasvlakte2 is especially constructed to facilitate chemical and container companies.  The new port has a draft of 20 meters, making it accessible to the latest generation of large container ships.
