Across the Bridge is a long-term documentary project about the hard life in the countryside. Öland might be known as the “Island of Sun and Wind”, but there is more to the island than that. The inhabitants I’ve gotten to know live far away from the Öland you see in the tourist brochures. They are farmers working 12-hour shifts to be able to control the growing pile of bills. Artists who don’t have the time to be artists because of having to take second jobs in nursing or healthcare. There is unemployment and illicit work. But there is also light – and hope. A sense of fellowship and belonging. Creativity. But the island is slowly depopulated. I’ve come to understand what life in the rural countryside is all about.
My long-term documentary project “Across the Bridge” about everyday life on the island is published as a photobook (publisher Journal, 2016). The project contains 56 photos taken during ten years.
