April 6th, 2009. At 3.32.29 AM a 5.9 Richter magnitude earthquake devastated L’Aquila (Abruzzo, Italy) and the surrounding area, leaving 309 victims, 1600 people wounded, ruins and thousands of refugees.
After 10 years, not much has changed.
The following images picture the devastation, the extremely slow reconstruction, the MAP (Moduli Abitativi Provvisori) and the daily life of people still waiting for a Home.
A mother (Serena) whispers: my little daughter once asked me, “mom, how is living within walls?”

Artist statement: This personal selection, named "Living within Walls", represents a small portion of the devastating consequences of an earthquake that hit central Italy in spring 2009. As I was born and raised near the most affected areas (i.e. the city of L'Aquila), I have always felt very close to this national tragedy. This is why, when I was contacted by "Lo stato delle cose" (The state of things), a permanent observatory of social and documentary photography on L'Aquila and surrounding cities in ruins, I accepted with no hesitations. Thanks to this project, I had the opportunity to join 100 Italian photographers to witness - 10 years after the tragedy - the currently visible devastating earthquake effects, and the conditions of people still living in the MAPs (Temporary housing modules). Hopefully, projects and initiatives like these will help to generate collective awareness and urge the government and institutions to accelerate reconstruction and provide a new home to the population.

A most interesting project. Astounding how little progress has been made.
The ruins, are, actually a, good thing then, because, now, there’s, no walls, separating people from, their, neighbors, as they all work toward that, common goal is, rebuilding.
