Unimaginable, unbelievable, incomprehensible, is only a rudimentary description of what happened one night in July 2021 in the Ahr Valley: within a few hours, a huge flood wave had ripped through towns and countryside, depriving tens of thousands of people of their livelihoods, their homes, and often their loved ones. My series shows the effects of this destruction by a previously unimaginable natural disaster in the heart of Europe. My pictures should reveal how nature has destructively presented itself here while depicting the resulting challenges locals were and still are confronted with.
