The story of portrait photography is pretty fascinating, showing how much the art and tech behind it have changed over time.

Back in the day, portrait photography kicked off with the daguerreotype in 1839, thanks to Louis Daguerre. These were super detailed images on silver-plated copper. Around the same time, William Henry Fox Talbot came up with calotypes, which produced images on paper.

Then came the ambrotypes and tintypes in the 1850s to 1880s. These used glass and metal plates and were a bit cheaper and more durable than daguerreotypes. André-Adolphe-Eugène Disdéri’s carte de visite became a hit, leading to lots of portrait studios popping up.

In the 1890s to 1910s, the pictorialist movement took off. This era focused on making photos look more artistic, with folks like Julia Margaret Cameron creating soft-focus, emotional portraits.

The 1920s to 1940s saw a shift to sharp focus and realism. Photographers like Edward Weston and Dorothea Lange ditched the soft focus for more realistic shots. Hollywood’s rise also meant more celebrity portraits, with George Hurrell’s iconic images of film stars.

Post-1950s, color photography came into play, adding vibrancy to portraits. The 1990s and 2000s brought the digital revolution, making portrait photography easier and more versatile. Social media and smartphones have since democratized the field, allowing everyone to snap and share portraits instantly.

Some big names in portrait photography include Richard Avedon, known for his minimalist black-and-white portraits, Annie Leibovitz with her elaborate celebrity portraits, and Steve McCurry, famous for his impactful “Afghan Girl” photo.

Today, trends include environmental portraits, capturing subjects in their natural settings, and lifestyle portraits, focusing on candid, everyday moments.

Portrait photography is huge worldwide. About 45% of global pro photographers and 65% in the US specialize in portraits. Wedding photography, a big part of portrait work, makes up about 40% of the global photography industry’s revenue.
