Written by J. B. Hogan
Judging the past is an avocation today,
criticizing the dead for obvious flaws,
looking down on earlier, insensitive times.
They and it are deserving, of course, for
they stole, maim, killed, destroyed,
in a manner unlike the present,
more civilized world, this era of
heightened awareness, rising above,
transcending the flawed past.
Still, there could be a future
where people look back,
judge the current now, find it
perhaps not so complete,
possibly lacking in foresight,
maybe failing to make proper plans,
cluttering up clear paths to the future,
abjectly failing to rise above
its own time and place,
concluding perhaps that
what went before was
not as evolved as believed,
not as perfect as assumed,
not shepherded nearly so well
as might have been hoped for.
