Adorno said
that to write poetry
after Auschwitz
is barbaric.
We did it anyway
though he was
probably right.
Heidegger wanted
his Nazi youth camps
buried in his grave
like so many
anonymous corpses
but they burrowed their way
through the earth
leaving thousands of holes
in his coffin.
Roosevelt sat crippled
building camps for the Japanese.
Sipping his free glass
of Gallo wine
as he removed St. Louis
and all her Jewish passengers
from his campaign itinerary.
APolish box car
is surrounded by the walls
of the Holocaust museum
so it can never be removed.
I walk up the car’s plank,
enter the darkness
and touch it.
I’m standing still
but the wood is trembling.
The air is musty and bitter.
I pretend it’s mothballs.
I’m alive, so I step out
hoping the horror
will stay trapped inside
