The time is coming when the only love
will be in books, hidden, cloistered,
from the banning and burnings.
We pandered to the hate, the guns
the amendments allowed for. Children died,
we thought and prayed, hoping it was a phase.
It started with fear, buttressed by bigotry,
which grew seismically once vindicated,
and coaxed from under rocks and slime.
The only civility now, in the New Culture,
is armed guard, military in the streets,
shooting rioters, rounding up leftists.
We are lost. Children no longer school,
no one respects, or speaks unless asked,
truth is irrelevant as it nears extinction.
We will search for another home,
another season of breathable air,
a pen to write on a tablet of future veracity.
