Written by Yongbo Ma
As spring approaches, cows polish the copper lamps,
icicles are displayed on straw by children,
just like me, smiling by the door,
memories suddenly flood back.
A broken boat from winter still rests by the door,
as gusts blow, an overwintered queen bee emerges from its seams,
she’s still a bit clumsy, a bit frail,
her initial shelter was a piece of red paper from firecrackers.
Chrysalises roll in the depths of the soil,
dreaming of rainwater, young eagles, and children’s probing fingers.
In the deep valleys, what resounds
are drifting ice floes and the broadcasts from the borderlands.
Books will seem outdated, dogs will look bewildered,
their backs stirring the black waves of the night.
Whoever breaks a willow branch at this time can live
and, with a snow grouse on melting snow, jot down notes for themselves.
My beloved will clear the ashes, clean the cups and bowls,
slightly plump, like a mothering cat, memories restored,
surprised that the shadows on the wall haven’t moved for a long time,
from the window, a distant scene is in view.
We’ll walk on the long embankment, stop to buy some expired newspapers,
reading greedily like two isolated individuals,
until the lead types fly over the treetops with a flock of sparrows,
heading towards the cracked lake.
Steam floats over the fur-covered windowsill,
the coughing in the yard grows louder and louder,
as I lift the child’s bright red face from the snowdrift,
I see your wet fringe, the light in your eyes.
The sound of the wind draws nearer, it’s time for spring to approach,
making my way home against the wind, I grasp the earth tightly,
just like spilled milk on the table, trees standing in the house,
we greet each other like two cats recovering from a long illness.
