Written by Tansy D Gunnar
Years ago, my heart was torn into pieces.
Blown by Hurricane winds,
They scattered, disappearing in a multitude of directions,
Never to be seen again.
My heartless body left stagnant,
My eyes were scorched by fires burning all around.
My mind wandered far away and wide,
Dreaming up scenarios,
Where fate could intervene.
Like a fork on in the road,
Where suddenly we would meet.
I tried to think of anything to get me away from here.
I wanted to help you,
To see your addiction and homelessness through.
A forgotten, tiny shred of my heart remained.
It was sharp as a razor and cursed by ghost pains.
My heart’s missing pieces,
Replaced by a collage of dreams of better days ahead.
Duct-taped bandages, damning the flood.
Overwhelmed by obligations,
Holding on to sanity as my heart continued to bleed.
My worst fears manifested.
You were dead.
The time never arrived.
Blocked by myself and others,
I couldn’t be of help.
The weight of my obligations,
Bound to my desire to live and to flourish.
Suffocated me,
Leaching the breath used to sustain my own life.
Praying, you would have the strength to survive.
What was once the safest path,
The one that I thought I knew
and trusted,
Became the darkest.
For it belonged to a hunter
With traps and shackles,
and tied me down.
Unable to escape the discomfort and agony,
I grew complacent inside my confined comfort zone.
This…
The largest burden upon my potential,
Which
Robbed me of my essence.
Marriage is a partnership,
What a funny sentiment,
One I do not know, instead it has
Left me hollow
In a world of strangers and ghosts.
