This series is my way of looking at San Francisco without looking straight at it. The photos are candid, shot on the streets, in passing – and rarely show full faces or bodies. Instead, they focus on pieces – inviting a slower look at everyday scenes within this cityscape.
I’m drawn to the kinds of moments that emerge through the act of looking – fragments that catch my eye as I move through the streets. It’s often the quick, peripheral details: a shadow, a gesture, a flash of color – that spark something and suggest a story without needing to show the whole scene. This series captures the feeling of the city more than a literal image of it. It’s about gestures, textures, light, and how people take up space in a constantly changing urban landscape.
Fragments isn’t meant to document in a comprehensive way. It’s more of a quiet observation – a collection of moments that might otherwise go unnoticed, stitched together to show the rhythm and presence of San Francisco.
Artist Bio: Based in the Central Coast and San Francisco Bay area, Edwin Carungay is a graphic design and multimedia producer – with a profound passion for photography. He began photographing as a teenager in the 1980s, immersed in Southern California’s skateboarding subculture – capturing friends as they skated streets, ditches, and backyard ramps. This love for skateboarding and documenting its certain adventures sparked his initial interest in photography. Edwin’s formal training started in his high school darkroom and graphic arts courses, then continuing into university alongside his studies as a graphic design major. Photography remained a constant sideline companion in his life. It was Edwin’s wife, Lesha, also a photographer, who introduced him to Alex Webb’s work through the book, The Suffering of Light. This was an epiphany – marking his introduction to the fine art world of street and documentary photography, igniting a passion that transformed his hobby into a dedicated pursuit. As a street and documentary photographer, Edwin’s devotion has led to local and international exhibitions, and awards from long-admired institutions. His formative years while in the skateboarding scene are evident in the unscripted and often sentimental images he makes. When not working as a creative marketing and communications professional, he spends his time exploring avenues and streets, capturing colorful, candid moments of people navigating their lives, both in his hometown and abroad.
