Flash Fiction by Roberto Sanchez
The Blade runs on rhythm: engines, heels, whispers. But sometimes the rhythm snaps, and chaos spills out.
Music leaking from cracked windows.
Headlights cut through—
and there he is.
Young man.
Running.
Free-balling.
Shouts of “what the fuck.”
Chaos.
He cuts between cars, legs pumping, eyes wild — convinced his life ends in the next five seconds.
Behind him — four shadows. Pimps shouting, gold chains flashing as they pound the pavement after him.
The Blade freezes. Girls in stilettos stop mid-step.
Johns forget their hunger.
Even traffic holds.
Everyone watches this man tear down Figueroa, bare skin glowing under neon.
The sound? Not music. Not traffic. Just the slap of his bare feet, the rasp of his lungs, the high-pitched chant tearing from his throat: “No, no, no, no!”
People laugh. People scream. Some just stare.
The Blade has seen overdoses, shootouts, girls vanish into the night — but this? This was new.
For a moment, it felt biblical. A man stripped to nothing, sprinting for his soul, chased by the streets themselves.
Then he was gone, swallowed into the dark.
Engines revved again. Heels clicked again. The Blade exhaled.
Just another Tuesday night.
