I am beautiful.
My ghetto is beautiful.
In the ghetto
there are gay, small yellow butterflies
that land softly on my nose.
There are Mariachis who
drag their instruments up and down
the dusty streets from bar to bar
singing all day and night.
There are hundreds of colorful
exotic fruits and vegetables
which are fresh and delicious and eaten
in the ghetto.
There are good herb shops
palm trees and green hills
where I sit and relax.
There are young Mexican girls
in Catholic school uniforms
shining in the sun, during recess, looking as lively
as if just dropped out of Heaven.
God they are beautiful.
There are old ladies with big arms
and big bodies, who work
hard cooking big dinners
and doing laundry loads for their
families and the old men who sit
on the steps of their houses
after work, drinking beer and
watching the day go by.
