Written by Liz Mackenzie
The ownerless hat sat
Dejected on unforgiving
Cold, metal bench
In desolate station
Awaiting nameless trains.
It lay still except for
Shafts of wind lifting
It’s motionless cause
From end to end and
Middle of barren bars.
Once or twice it was
Moved by some polite soul
Held at arm’s length
Or slid by gloved hand
Side to side and back.
Once it had been fine
A hat among hats
A head turner, a topic
Of conversation for
Those who mind such things.
But now, but now it was
Merely the ownerless hat
Ever more battered by life’s
Lack of charm, to slowly
Curl and die, like a leaf.
