Trees have long been a symbol of endurance, transformation, and quiet strength — they mark the passing of seasons and the rhythms of landscape and life. In this series, Tree Impressions, I explore these familiar forms through a more expressive lens, seeking not simply to document what is seen, but to evoke what is felt.

All of the images were made in the UK, a landscape whose trees carry centuries of weather, myth, and memory within their branches. Most of the photographs are created using multiple exposure, a technique that allows time, light, and subtle movement to merge within a single frame. Through this layering, the images become less about representation and more about sensation – a visual echo of how a moment among trees can feel.

Edges soften, colours drift, and textures blend, suggesting a space between photography and painting, between stillness and motion. Each image is an impression –  a response to the atmosphere of a place, to the quiet energy of trees, and to the fleeting interplay of light and air.

Tree Impressions is, ultimately, a meditation on presence and change –  an invitation to pause, to look more slowly, and to find in trees a reflection of both endurance and transformation.

Bio

Sally Mason is a landscape photographer based in the Cotswolds, UK.  Her passion for photography began early in life and has evolved into a full-time pursuit, rooted in her love of the natural world.

She spends much of her time immersed in the landscape, drawn to its quiet rhythms and subtle variations of light, colour, and form. Time in nature, spent trying to capture its elemental beauty, brings stillness, focus, and a deep sense of belonging. Creating work that reflects something of Sally’s emotional relationship with the landscape is more important to her than literal representation.

Sally’s approach is intuitive, guided by whatever catches her attention in the moment. She has spent many hours photographing the movement of grasses swaying in the wind and is fascinated by the serendipitous nature of this kind of photography - and by how the ephemeral can be captured.

Motion plays an important role in her work, with its capacity to transform the commonplace into the poetic. She is drawn to the lyrical and often uses long exposures, intentional camera movement, and multiple exposures to create images that evoke nature’s enduring rhythm and flow.

She explores the landscape without expectation, remaining open to the subtle beauty it presents. Finding fresh ways to interpret that beauty lies at the heart of her practice.
