‘The Pennine Way is Britain’s first long distance path. Inspired by the American Appalachian Trail, it was conceived by Tom Stephenson, a keen rambler, in the 1930’s. At this time, the public’s ‘right to roam’ was a hot topic of discussion, in the wake of the controversial Kinder Scout Mass Trespass. Stephenson made the case for the route in a newspaper article in 1935, but the necessary legislative wheels turned slowly. There were many barriers to overcome: over 70 miles of rights of way wrangles to resolve and an Act of Parliament to ratify. Formal approval from the government eventually came in 1951 and the route was officially opened on the 24th April 1965.

The 268-mile Pennine Way begins in Edale, a fifteen-minute train ride from South Yorkshire’s largest conurbation, Sheffield. Remaining resolutely rural, it winds its windy way north, through the Pennines, enters the rolling greenery of the Yorkshire Dales, flirts with the River Tees, before meeting Hadrian’s Wall and finishing in the Cheviot Hills at Kirk Yetholm, just over the Scottish border. The guidebooks describe it as ‘strenuous’ and it has, so far, lived up to its name. Not so much physically, but psychologically: overcoming the combination of inclement weather, relentless bog and isolation has proved a formidable challenge. It is one which my best friend and co-walker Gareth and I hope to meet in the Spring of this year.’

These images were taken during my attempt to hike, in sections, England’s 268-mile National Trail with my best friend.
The black and white photographs seek to capture the austerity, isolation and unexpected beauty of the terrain. We are due to complete the final leg this Spring.
