I have long looked at photography as a means of saying things that I cannot quite find the words for.  In this sense, I think of English as a second language when talking about my photography, so take these words for what they are worth but realize they say less than the photos they accompany. I have long held a deep affinity for winter. In comparison to a lot of photographers I know I run an opposite calendar. Where they slowdown in the winter and catch up, I generate more work. And when summer arrives and they head out to create is when I slow down to catch up on the imagery I made over the past winter months.  Perhaps it is because I am an introverted person and I love the quiet of the winter season.  Places crowded in the summer are empty in the winter. Perhaps it is because I find the soft light of winter more appealing than the direct light of summer. Maybe it is because I find it easier to stay warm than I do to cool off. I am sure it is all of these things and so many more that draw me to photograph in winter. It is because my favorite sound is that of snow crunch under a footstep, or the even quieter sound of a snowy forest.  It is because I love the bit of cold air on my face and in my lungs when I breathe in. And it is the sense of timeless that seems to linger at the edge of a frozen lake when nothing in the world seems to be moving. Winter to me is magical and rather than make me want to hunker down it seems to enliven me. These images then have not been made as components of any greater statement, but rather as records of some of the magic I have gone looking for, and found.

Bio:

Zeb Andrews, having lived his entire life in the Pacific Northwest, married his love of the outdoors with his love of photography in the early 2000s. His first "real" camera, a Nikon FM2n, coincided with a job at a camera store in north Portland: Blue Moon Camera and Machine. It would be easy to say, "the rest is history" at this point but you probably want to know a bit more. He has spent the last 20+ years working full time amongst photographers and photography. For over a decade he taught photography as an instructor for Newspace Center for Photography and PNCA. This complete immersion into the world of photography, coupled with his passion for the art of combining light and thoughts into photos has brought him a long way over the past two decades. And he has the photographic evidence to prove it.
