The solitude of the video-poker player
is not broken by the clinking of anonymous coins
slid into a cardboard Coca-Cola cup,
pressing, pressing, pressing,
at the mercy of randomly programmed combinations,
dazzled by graphic and sound effects
that recall the noises and lights of a Christmas day.
Nature laughs at the unnatural clash between man and machine,
man against machine, machine against man,
condemning you to the ataraxia of stereotyped gestures,
releasing endorphins with every fingerprint
you leave on the keys of economic indebtedness,
and you yourself isolate yourself, pressing and pressing yourself away
from the social origins of your malaise:
abdication from the marital roof, mobility and
unemployment, depression brought on by reaching
retirement age, or cancer.
What remains is the image of the glass windows of a darkened dairy bar
immersed in the concrete of an urban existence,
of a man, without love, in search of luck at Jacks or Better
or of a remedy for the ailments of boredom,
of an impending ruin, like a dark crown
of crows circling your greying head,
abandoned to shipwreck, alone, in the technological storm
authorized by State monopolies.
