Alexa Van de Walle is a New York City-based street and documentary photographer. Over a week in 2016, she made these photographs in Havana on her first trip to Cuba. The series captures the grace, strength and dignity of its people despite their harsh living conditions and shows that Havana is a timeless and nostalgic city, with colorful, decaying architecture, historic cars and beautiful people. All enhanced by the radiant Caribbean light. A photographers dream.
An adventurous traveler, Alexa has photographed across the globe including Cuba, Vietnam, Russia, Kenya and the Arctic Circle. A street photographer at heart, what catches her eye are notable moments and gestures, dramatic or harmonious colors, rich detail and balanced composition and a strong sense of place. For the viewer, a photo can evoke an emotion, reveal something about culture or identity, and trigger curiosity even the creation of a story. A retired marketing executive, she has a MBA from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. She gave up her career to pursue her passion for photography.
