Although the island of Aegina lies only a short distance from Athens, it continues to hold spaces where life unfolds beyond postcard beauty and summer leisure. In Greece, the local taverna is more than a place to eat, it is a cornerstone of community life. In 2013, in the northern village of Vagia, I discovered such a space: a modest, family-run taverna, unadorned and deeply human which I kept visiting and became acquainted with the owners.

Silent Strength is a photographic tribute to Kyra Katina and her husband, a couple whose lives were defined by labor and loss. In the intimate bustle of the taverna, Kyra Katina could be found peeling buckets of potatoes and onions. She kept holding a knife as if it was an extension of her arm. While Kyra Katina prepared vegetables, her husband tended the coals outside.

In May 2014 I discovered that their only son, Theodoris, had suddenly died at the age of forty-three from a heart attack. This loss forced the couple to continue working, supporting their daughter-in-law and helping to raise their two grandsons. During the summer months, the taverna was open daily. The grandfather became again the leader of the family business. “No matter how deep I am in the well,” he told me, “You must stand on your own two feet.” The weight of responsibility seemed etched into his posture, his resolve mirrored in the way he managed the grill, turned souvlaki skewers over glowing coals. His movements were synchronized, almost ceremonial.

As they worked, I watched their hands, wrinkled, textured, inscribed by time. The skin on their palms resembled a map: a cartography of endurance. These hands had prepared thousands of meals, raised a family, and carried unbearable sorrows.

When Kyra Katina spoke of her childhood, her eyes would brighten. She grew up in hardship, the daughter of farmers, and had worked since she was a little girl. “The worst thing a mother can experience is the loss of her child,” she said, her voice soft but unwavering. Yet she continued, “My hands are strong. I live for my grandchildren. I want to see them grow. I want to help them finish school.”

This series observes how dignity, memory, and tradition intertwine in daily life.

Silent Strength explores the intersection of labor and loss, tradition and survival. It is a tribute to a generation for whom work is identity, endurance is instinct, and sorrow is carried quietly. It honors those who mourn and continue, whose resilience sustains families, communities, and memory.
