This series forms part of my ongoing #humansofcapetown project, a long-term exploration of everyday humanity within the streets of Cape Town.
Through black and white street photography, I examine how individuals move through urban space both physically and emotionally. Reflections in shop windows, rain-soaked pavements, artificial light at night and fleeting glances between strangers become metaphors for duality, identity and presence.
Cape Town is not simply a backdrop in this work. It is a participant. Its layered architecture, colonial facades, modern glass structures and inner-city grit shape the emotional tone of each frame.
The images explore solitude and connection, tension and tenderness, anonymity and recognition. Each photograph captures a fragment of lived experience within a city that is constantly shifting yet deeply human.
This body of work asks:
Who are we within the city, and who are we when no one is looking?

Artist Statement I am a Cape Town based street photographer and founder of the #humansofcapetown project. My work is rooted in presence and respect. I walk the city, engage with its people and document unscripted moments that reveal the emotional architecture of urban life. Black and white allows me to strip away distraction and focus on feeling. Without color, light becomes language. Shadow becomes narrative. Texture becomes memory. Cape Town is a city of contrast. Wealth and hardship. Ocean light and inner-city density. Celebration and quiet endurance. I am drawn to these intersections and to reflections that reveal layered identities. Street photography, for me, is not about spectacle. It is about witnessing. It is about recognizing that within every passerby exists a story worthy of attention. Through #humansofcapetown, I aim to honor those stories and create a visual archive of shared humanity within the evolving landscape of Cape Town.
