The concept of public space was probably born along with the creation of the first cities, when houses began to be built around the open spaces where goods were exchanged. Since then, in addition to trading, public spaces have also functioned as places of gathering, religious worship, as well as political, cultural and sports events. As cities grew and societies changed and became more complex, their form changed, too. Sometimes they were developed while other times they were depopulated and devalued, sometimes they were full of life, while others they were degraded to a means of transition between private spaces. For some people, they are synonymous with entertainment and safety while for others they represent loneliness or fear. For most people they are the outing from their home, for some others their own home. By definition, public spaces belong to everyone and to no one.

Despite referring to the above matters, my photographs are unable to address them. The fragmental language of the photographic medium leaves them hanging pendulous in ambiguity. The project Public Spaces is the result of the dialogue between the contradictory nature of public spaces and their fraudulent photographic depiction.
