The bunch of grapes hangs from the vine,
Flavour of candyfloss with a tinge of tart,
Like the ebb and flow of the ocean’s tide,
Gnawing away at the sands of time,
Aesop’s Fables comes to mind.
Birdmasks and wide brimmed hats were the norm,
The Black Death an epidemic of havoc world around.
The shadow of kohl lined eyes and a glossy mane,
Persephone cradling Cerebrus in her underground lair.
The call of Hades was the song of the day,
Ashes to ashes and dust to dust.
Mama opens the closet and looks inside,
Only to find black and grey and white,
She calls it a reminder of blank screens and funeral pyres,
Of charred remnants of a barbecue gone haywire,
I say to her if Chardonnay is the queen of wine,
The Cabernet Sauvignon is king paradigm.
The nightsky with shooting stars that play,
And constellations waltzing in flecks of grey,
Hurricanes and tornadoes forging through,
Windmills bruised and knocked askew.
In this void of nothingness,
The voices of the greats reverberate,
President Lincoln with a country to redeem,
And Martin Luther King who had a dream.
Black oyster clams with wondrous pearls concealed,
The graphite turns to diamonds of appeal,
A stark reminder that what is today need not be tomorrow,
That beauty is not a thing to borrow,
And indeed lies in the hands of the beholder.
