Written by Timothy J. Maynard
We always trotted steady, side by side,
She spoke of cradles and a silver ring,
Our dreams were different during our ride.
She sought the future as a blushing bride,
And all the sweetness that the years could bring,
We always trotted steady, side by side.
I felt the power of the hunter’s stride,
Of wind and speed and every wild thing,
Our dreams were different during our ride.
She spoke of travel with a quiet pride,
Of songs that mothers to their infants sing,
We always trotted steady, side by side.
I watched the hawk above the meadow glide,
To feel the freedom only youth could wing,
Our dreams were different during our ride.
Though love was pulling like a rising tide,
I felt the tension of a pulled heartstring;
We always trotted steady, side by side,
Our dreams were different during our ride.
