Hurry back

Cities are full of small, unscripted moments that appear and disappear in seconds. A glance through a car window, a stranger waiting in silence, a bird stealing crumbs from a table. These fragments of everyday life often go unnoticed in the rush of urban movement.

My approach to street photography is observational rather than intrusive. I’m interested in how people occupy public space—how architecture, reflections, weather, and chance interactions create fleeting visual stories. Sometimes the subject is clearly human; other times it’s the trace of human presence: a bicycle passing through fog, workers suspended against glass towers, or a dog waiting inside a parked car.

Many of these photographs were made while simply walking through cities with a camera in hand, responding instinctively to whatever caught my attention: the light, a gesture, the mood. Street photography rewards patience and curiosity. My goal is not to control the scene, but to recognize the moment when the seemingly ordinary briefly becomes something visually or emotionally resonant.

These images are small observations from larger urban narratives.

Small Figures, Tall City

Artist statement:

Arnold Plotnick is a New York–based photographer whose work focuses on candid moments in everyday urban life. His street photography explores the subtle interactions between people, architecture, light, and chance. He works intuitively, often photographing while walking through cities and responding to fleeting gestures, reflections, patterns, shadows, and juxtapositions. His images frequently reveal layered moments—people framed by glass, reflections merging with movement, or solitary figures within large urban spaces.

A retired veterinarian, Plotnick turned his longtime interest in photography into a serious creative pursuit later in life. His work reflects a curiosity about human behavior and the subtle narratives unfolding in public spaces. Through street photography, he seeks to capture brief moments that might otherwise pass unnoticed—small visual stories that reveal something about the rhythms of contemporary city life.
