‘Once We Were Anarchists’ is a documentary focusing on portraits of individuals associated with punk and underground music culture. The photographs being taken in the subjects bedrooms gives a sense of personality and innocence that could not have been achieved within other locations. Showing that these individuals have departed from its anarchistic roots to become something that diverts popular cultural norms and is symbolic in the lives of those who are a part of it.

The title ‘Once We Were Anarchists’ is a song by folk/punk singer-songwriter Frank Turner. Jacob chose this title specifically due to its link to punk culture being built around anarchy, while stating how the punk community has developed beyond anarchistic ideology.

The individual image titles however are song titles chosen by the subjects of each photograph, be it a favorite song, or a song that is very significant in the person’s life, linking the photographs to the subject love of music.
